32,000 housing apprentices is a useful number. Completions will be the test.

July 2026 figures for the Key Apprenticeship Program showed 32,563 apprentices in housing construction after the first full year. Most are with small businesses. The next number that matters is how many finish.

On 12 July 2026 the federal skills portfolio published first-year figures for the housing construction stream of the Key Apprenticeship Program. 32,563 apprentices were in training. Almost 85 per cent were with small businesses. Half were 19 or under. The largest groups were carpenters and joiners, then plumbers, then electricians.

An apprenticeship that starts in 2025 or 2026 does not become an independent leading hand on a 2026 hospital facade. It becomes useful later, and only if the person is still in the trade.

Write down how many apprentices you have, what year they are in, and who is teaching them. If that list is empty and your growth plan is not, the plan is the problem.
