26 Aug 2026 - Behind the Facade
The June quarter was not one construction market. It was two.
Preliminary work-done figures for the June quarter 2026 showed building activity up and engineering activity down. Treating those as the same pipeline is how diaries get misread.
On 26 August 2026 the ABS published preliminary construction work done for the June quarter. Total work done fell 2.1 per cent to $82.5 billion. Building work done rose 1.3 per cent. Engineering work done fell 6.0 per cent. The trend estimate for the total was still slightly up.
That split matters more than the total. A cladding or glazing business lives in building work. A civil contractor lives in engineering work.
Spending more on new homes does not automatically mean more dwellings finished. A record dollar figure can sit next to a modest completion rate.
A dull checklist
Write two lines: building up or down, engineering up or down. Then look at your own jobs under those headings. If the national number and your diary disagree, trust the diary.
